Pearl Jam has always been a band that I’ve felt a strong connection to. The “Grundge” era was in full swing during my early adulthood years so doing a PJ piece was inevitable. It wasn’t until the release of Cameron Crowe’s documentary (PJ20) that I finally found my inspiration and direction for a long overdue Pearl Jam tribute. It is also one of the very few times where I actually had the title in mind prior to working out the actual visual direction of the piece. The general idea was formed when the documentary explained one particular PJ show in Vancouver where the security was very aggressive towards the patrons/fans of the band. It was during this show, the band later explained, that they saw a change in their usually shy front man Eddie Vedder. As the show progressed, an incredibly intense version of Eddie was revealed. The original thought process had me painting a young Eddie Vedder but as I researched further, I decided on a slightly older version due to their continued intensity in their live performances and fighting for what they believe in (see Pearl Jam vs. Ticketmaster). Borrowing a line for their acclaimed song “Jeremy”, “We Unleased The Lion” seemed to be a truly serendipitous title.
