The Power of Few: Signed and Numbered

Stefane Berube

I've always loved looking at National Geographic photos, attempting to draw and paint the animals from the images I’ve seen. It became a life goal to achieve the quality of work I’ve seen in the magazines, as well as experience a moment worth freezing in time for the world to see.

Hiking through long grass, staying the recommended 30 feet away from the rhinos was not providing me with the angle and perspective I had in mind. The next morning, however, I awoke to find that a small family of rhinos grazing peacefully ten feet away from my tent. I chose a 50 mm lens to control the depth of field and pull focus on the central rhino. Despite knowing it was dangerous to be so close to them, I couldn’t pass up the once in a lifetime opportunity to get within 6 feet of the central white rhino, right at eye level.

Winner of the National Geographic Your Shot Editors Choice Award.
