TEXTURES OF LIFE, BOTSWANA, 2011

Beverly Joubert

“I gave it that title because you can see the incredible textures on his ears and all down his face. It also represents the textures of the place the elephant is in: the dry, cracked earth. If you take a photograph of the cracked earth and a photo of an elephant, there are so many similarities. What I really love about this image is that he’s incredibly calm and gentle. I was only a couple of feet away and by acting very calmly myself, and not exuding any anger or fear, I was able to take the picture.”
