SKIES OF HOPE, KENYA, 2011
Beverly Joubert
“This particular picture was taken in the Masai Amboseli National Park, in Kenya. Mt. Kilimanjaro is in the distance. Dereck and I started to follow some herds in search of water. I was on a hill, lying quite low on the ground, with a very wide-angle lens. As the elephants approached, I took the photograph.
What I love is the extreme contrast: the enormity of the elephants on the barren landscape and the accumulating clouds, which hold the story of hope. Not just that rain is coming, but the hope of protecting elephants. Ninety-six elephants are killed every day—about five per hour. But looking at the clouds I felt hope-that the force of humanity will eventually put a stop to this.”
