Seeking Shelter: Signed and Numbered

Jennifer Hayes

A harp seal pup called a whitecoat seeks shelter from the relentless winds that scour the sea ice covering the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec, Canada. The pups are born on the ice in late February and nurse high-fat milk from their mothers for 12-15 days before she leaves to mate and migrate North. The pup stays on the ice relying on their fat reserve until hunger or ice conditions force them into the sea to learn how to swim, how to eat, what to eat, how to be a harp seal.
