Savute Dreams: Artist Proof Platinum Edition

Beverly Joubert

In the Photographer’s Own Words
“A lion surveys his pride and territory. This lion was once a legend in the Savute region of Chobe National Park in Botswana. We followed this territorial lion I called Black Mane over many years.”

About the Photograph
Savute lions are infamous for their ferocity and unique hunting habits. Unlike daytime hunting East-African lions, the lions of Savute do most of their hunting at night. These lions also renowned for a hunting phenomenon not typically seen: preying on elephants – the largest predator-to-prey weight ratio known among terrestrial mammals. This survival tactic is exhibited during the late dry season (August-November) when their normal prey migrate out of area.
