Majestic Gaze: Signed and Numbered

Beverly Joubert

“This majestic beast of Duba Plains dominates the landscape, the other prides, buffalo herds and anything else he casts his eyes on. There are so few places left in the world where lions do reign supreme, like this male whose shear power is irrepressible. In fact, in the last 75 years, Africa's lion population has plummeted 95 percent and we continue to loose 5 lions per day. Big game hunters travel to seven countries in Africa to shoot over 500 lions a year - Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Of the mere 20,000 lions left in the wild, males comprise 12 to 15 percent of that number, says Joubert. Which leads to his sobering estimate that less than 3,000 of these dominant male lions roam Africa. If declines continue at their current pace around the world, this species faces a very real risk of extinction."
