“We were making the film, Relentless Enemies. Every day we were out following the buffalo herd. These lions are unique in that they don’t hunt anything but buffalo. So we knew if we found the buffalo, we’d find the predators. But it would take hours, waiting for something to happen. Often the buffalo would lie in a huge circle through the cool hours of the morning. Only when it was hot would they get up and start moving. That’s what happened here. It started about nine in the morning and continued for about six-and-a-half hours. We were in an open Land Cruiser, with the windshield down and no doors, so we could jump in quickly, if we needed to take a photograph. Dereck remembers that he had blood on his leg after filming. We could only think it was a lion that went past really close or the buffalo’s blood sprayed on his leg.”
