DELTA HERDS, BOTSWANA, 2009
Beverly Joubert
“I was in a helicopter. There wasn’t enough space to sit on a seat because we were filming at the time and had all the electronics with us. So I was strapped in, sitting on the floor, with my legs out on the struts. We were searching for zebra herds. After the first rains, the zebra started to leave the Okavango Delta and migrate towards opposite extremes: a harsh desert that doesn’t have any shade or trees. It’s a saltpan and the zebras spend 4-5 months in the area getting enough minerals for their bodies because there are no minerals in the water. Delta Herds captures their migration—unique because all other migrations are across savannah or forest.”
